Encounter Restaurant is a trippy place to go! From the moment you walk in, you are transferred into a Jetsons-like world! First of all, the building itself looks like a UFO. Then there's the elevator that has unusual purple lighting and bazaar music. Next there's the decor, with its lime, red, blue, and purple hues. The walls have a sort of opalescent quality and are indented in ovals. Make sure you go inside the restroom which has black floors with pearly shells, and basins that sparkle like opals. The lava lamps at the bar will entertain your kids, as will the bartender's drink dispensers that make crazy lights and sounds. It's great for a giggle! My son still talks about how fun it was to visit this restaurant!
Best of all, at night the lights of the city are gorgeous from up here. The windows slant outward; one little girl said, "This is a little scary!" In the daytime it's really fun to watch the planes take off from up here.
Too bad it's freezing cold, which makes you want to leave asap. The AC seems to whirl around your ankles. But if you get a hot tea it will warm you up.
The prices are pretty high- lunch sandwiches are around $15 and dinner sandwiches are around $25. Kids meals are around $9. But the sandwiches are big enough to share, and they are delicious! Try the BLT.
This is a great place when you're waiting to pick someone up at the airport because the airport waiting area is really awful. If you have a few hours to kill because of a delayed flight you could also go to The Promenade at Howard Hughes Center. If you've just arrived from a long flight a nice place to run around and get some exercise is Santa Monica Beach and Pier, about 30 minutes by car.
To watch the planes land at take off at LAX, drive over to LAX Lookout Point.

This restaurant stands on its own, at LAX airport. Exit the 105 or 405 Freeway following signs to LAX, and once at LAX, follow the signs that say "arrivals." Encounter Restaurant is between Terminal 1 and 2. Park in the parking for Terminal 2 and walk around to the restaurant's entrance. You can see the building because it looks like a UFO! Click "satellite" on the map to see the UFO-shaped building from above.
Parking costs about $5 an hour.
