Fish Springs Hatchery, Big Pine (4 hrs nth of LA), Los Angeles California

Description

Fish Springs Hatchery is a fun place to take kids. They can see trout of all different sizes. It's fun for kids to use the fish food dispenser and then throw the food in, watching the fish jump up in a frenzy! What a blast! In the background are the impressive Sierra mountains.
From Fish Springs Hatchery, you can walk some dirt roads (no shade) through the desert to abandoned mines. The desert scenery is pretty with its silvery green plants, and the views of the Eastern Sierras are amazing.
A nice roadside town with a bakery, frozen yogurt place, bookstore, and coffee shop is Bishop, 23 minutes north of here.
20 minutes north and another 22 minutes west, go for a hike you will always remember at Big Pine Creek North Fork Trail, a gorgeous place under towering pines and soaring mountain views!
Also nice for a stop 20 minutes south of here is Mt. Whitney Fish Hatchery, which no longer has fish but transports you to Austria or Germany with its glorious building backed by the amazing mountains. Kids can see ducks in the pond.
25 minutes south, check out the Eastern California Museum, a humble museum that makes everyone in the family happy with its interesting, diverse exhibits.
Another good stop 2 hours south of here is Indian Wells Brewing Company where you can try unusual flavors of soda and see quirky roadside attractions like a skeleton driving a truck.
