There's a really good feeling on Frenchmen Street. Something is right about the feng shui! It has a cozier feeling than the French Quarter, plus no hoards of tourists. This is where the locals go to hear live music.
Stroll down the short, colorful street in the early evening and you are bound to hear fabulous sounds coming from several venues. The best: The Spotted Cat Music Club. Man, do they have good bands! You must be 21 years and older to go to this bar. If you want to listen to live music with your kids, Bamboula's Bar and Grill is a good choice. Here, in the attractive brick interior, you can hear talented artists starting at around 5pm. The food is so so, as with all bar and grill restaurants.
After dark, it's not very safe in this area.
Stroll slowly down Frenchmen Street listening to the bands and you'll want to move to New Orleans!
Another place to hear live music with kids is Little Gem Saloon in the Central Business District. This restaurant has an expensive, more formal atmosphere.
