New Orleans Botanical Garden, New Orleans LA

Description

New Orleans Botanical Garden in City Park is a formal series of themed gardens filled with flowers, patterned gates, arbors, and sculptures. Each is a true delight! The Pavilion of the Two Sisters is a perfect pale orange building with long rows of arched windows reaching to the ground. It is modeled after a French orangery, and offers stunning views of masses of azalea and camelia flowers! What a gorgeous sight, with the blue sky behind. This would be a wonderful place to get married. The rose garden has an attractive brick pathway through hedges and roses bushes, and an abundance of sculptures, art-deco benches, and Magnolia-bud fountains by Enrique Alferez, a Mexican artist. He used plain materials such as concrete, as was done in the Art Deco period, and patterns such a leaf designs. The Japanese garden is a small rectangle with rocks and shaped shrubs. There is a small house that shelters you, and a row of green and yellow bamboo. The Stove House is a lovely greenhouse filled with catci. Inside the Conservatory of the Two Sisters, a domed building, is a collection of ancient plants such as cycads, as well as a tropical rainforest area with the loveliest ferns, orchids, waterfall, rock cave, and bromeliads. It feels like you're on a hike in Hawaii! The lily pond in front of the conservatory is filled with water lilies of all different colors! The flowers and leaf patterns vary so much! Late March to early Fall is the time to see that water lilies. In the middle of the pond is a sculpture by Rose Marie Huth called Undine- a water nymph riding a fish. The lily pond is surrounded by formal rose gardens.
The train garden, open on weekends, is pure joy for children! Here, several model trains and a streetcar zoom along on a raised garden under the trees, passing models of houses and buildings (such as St. Louis Cathedral) from historic areas of New Orleans, and hiding as they pass through tunnels and a railcar building.
With your ticket you can also enter Storyland and Carousel Gardens- do not miss these magical places!
