Rockefeller Center Ice Rink, New York City New York

Description

Skating at Rockefeller Center is a dream come true! Here you can glide on the ice in the open air, taking in gorgeous sights all around you. The huge golden statue with a changing lit fountain in front and behind is lovely, as is the tall 30 Rock building towering above. People look down on you from above but it doesn't really bother you because you're engrossed in the moment.
For kids it's good value to get them a lesson here. The teacher is very kind and will have them confidently enjoying the ice more than if they try to catch on themselves. It only costs $20 more than paying to skate without a lesson. My daughter absolutely loved her lesson. It was her first time on the ice, and after the lesson she was able to go very slowly around the rink with my husband and I. It was such fun!
When I took off on my own, whizzing along on the ice, I felt like a kid again! I hadn't skated in a while but I remembered everything! And the sights all around gave me inspiration. This was one of the highlights of our trip and I highly recommend it.
Rockefeller Center is a great area to hang out after you skate. The wide open and very clean space is a welcome delight after being in New York's gritty streets and subway.
There is a nice French cafe called Bouchon Bakery across 49th Street from the ice rink where you can have lunch. There are also an abundance of cafes and restrooms in the huge, clean subway station below ground.
To buy tickets and skate rentals, walk outside from 30 Rock, across the plaza, and down the stairs near the Lego Store. There are restrooms at the ice rink.

For a wonderful view, go to the Top of the Rock observatory deck at night! (Also very expensive just like the ice skating- if you have to choose between the two, choose the ice skating!).
For NBC fans, there is a tour of the NBC studios inside the 30 Rock building.
While in Midtown, stroll around Paris-inspired Bryant Park
