Alexander Springs, Orlando FL

Description

Alexander Springs is a natural spring bubbling up into a river. There is a small white sand beach where kids can play, and some concrete steps leading into the water. The water is shallow, which makes it easy for kids to swim. The spring is far across the river from the beach, so you don't really get the gorgeous blue-green bubbling water like you do at other springs, unless you swim across braving the alligators. The vegetation is lush here, with maples and cabbage palms, and you really are away from it all, but the river can look quite dark compared to other springs and is not as inviting. Alexander Springs doesn't have the tropical feeling like Blue Spring State Park. Come in spring or summer when the manatees have eaten all the goopy seaweed, otherwise your swim won't be as nice.
Alexander Springs is not a state park but it does seem to be run by a government agency of some kind, which makes it nicer than the partying springs (such as Ginnie Springs) run by private people- there is no alcohol allowed, and the entry fee is affordable at $5.
It is an incredibly long and boring drive to this spring, and I don't really recommend it!
