Preisker Park is a surprisingly green park in otherwise dry, dusty Santa Maria. There's a popular purple and orange playground with giant slides, round steps that spiral around a pole, a rock climber, and farm animal bouncies that make sounds like moos. There are hills galore and huge open spaces where you can run over grass dotted with daisies. Pine trees provide shade here and there. A gazebo stands beside a lake with a fountain in the middle. Kids are drawn to the lake, loving to watch the fountain as it catches the sunlight. Here a huge, concrete pirate ship with starfish and turtle sculptures inspires imaginative play. A manmade river winds between rocks and leads into the lake. Across a large bowl of grass is another playground if you tire of the first.

Near the freeway, this park is a great place to stop if you're on a long road trip. Your kids can run free and burn off a lot of energy. We spent a wonderful hour here playing by the lake and running happily in the sun amongst the daisies.
There are restrooms and plenty of picnic tables.
For other playgrounds in Santa Maria, check out Robin Ventura Park, where there's a new playground amongst a cookie cutter development, and Waller Park, an older established park with lovely trees and a duck pond.
Kids love the Santa Maria Valley Discovery Museum, which has tons of activities to keep kids of all ages busy for an hour or two.
Drive out to the coast from here and see the famous sand dunes.
