Plein offers a youthful atmosphere. It is a giant, sunny square filled to the brim on warm days with people enjoying a coffee or beer at one of the many outdoor cafes. Stunning views of modern skyscrapers juxtaposed against historic buildings can be seen from the square. The square used to be a garden of the Counts of Holland, adjacent to 13th century gothic Binnenhof Castle. Take a stroll after your meal to the northwest corner of the square, past Mauritshuis (excellent art museum with great activity kit for kids to complete), through the magical gates of Binnenhof Castle, and into its courtyard with the golden fountain.[continued...]

At the northwest corner of Plein is Mauritshuis art museum, Plein 29, 2511 CS Den Haag, Netherlands. Open 10-6, with longer hours (till 8pm) on Thursday and shorter hours (opens 1pm) on Monday. Cost is 14 euros for adults, and free for kids 18 and under. Get the activity pack for kids!
