Southern Village is a cute area in the southernmost part of Chapel Hill. It is a U-shaped road on a hill, lined with outdoor cafes with colorful flower boxes. You can see a Methodist church steeple and hear its chimes. There is a village green in the middle of the U, and some nights events are held here such as movies night or family games night. Some Wednesday nights there is live music on the patio outside La Vita Dolce, a gelato place that also serves wine.
Pazzo is a nice fast option if you'd like a slice of pizza. You can also order a whole pizza and sit outside on the patio or in the front of the restaurant, or get waiter service in the fancier area in the back of the restaurant. The pizza has a delicious crust and sauce.
Al's Burger is a popular option, also with a lovely outdoor patio in the front.
There is also a Weaver Street Market, a great health food store with a bakery, cute indoor seating area with huge windows, and pleasant balcony on the side, plus seating outdoors in the front. Sometimes they offer live music.
Other restaurants include Rasa Malaysia (food from Singapore), and Subway sandwiches.
It's lovely to walk around Southern Village at night, when the trees at the green are lit with tiny lights and the church steeple is lit up. There are always plenty of people enjoying the warm, soft air of the Carolina nights.
To get a little nature, walk west on Aberdeen Dr and you will come to the Southern Village Greenway. It leads south to Southern Community Park (a fifteen minute walk on the bike path or six minute walk along Sumac Rd) which has an amazing playground.
You can also walk north from Southern Community Park, take the left fork to walk under Culbreth Rd in a pedestrian tunnel, and then take Morgan Creek Greenway to the right to Merritt's Pasture (an overgrown field) or to the left, ending at the Morgan Creek trailhead parking lot.
If you take the walking path south from Southern Community Park, you can choose from many different paved nature trails and also walk around the soccer fields and around a cute circular path with flowers.
The walking path is best on an overcast day because shade is intermittent. It is 2.4 miles, all paved, from the Morgan Creek trailhead in the north to the soccer fields in the south!
For a shady walk, explore the streets in Southern Village. It is gorgeous and you can walk a long way! Take Brookgreen or Parkview Crescent, Highgrove Dr, then Hillspring Ln. There are sidewalks on both sides of the road (surprisingly in Chapel Hill, which is otherwise pretty civilized, this is a rare thing). Every street has different homes, delightful flowers, and lots of shade from trees. It's wonderful! Hillspring Lane is a particularly stunning street with its steep incline, houses raised way up, and Highgrove Pocket Park with its stone wall. From these heights you also see some views, which is a rare thing in Chapel Hill. Bring your phone so you can wonder around, get lost, and then still get back to your parking spot.
