Southport Car Ferry to Fort Fisher, North Carolina NC

Description

North Carolina has lots of car ferries along the coast. It's a super fun activity for kids! The Southport Ferry takes you from the adorable town of Southport across the Cape Fear River to Fort Fisher, where there is lots to do. If you are staying at Southport, I recommend it, because you can expand the amount of things to do on your vacation. The Cape Fear River is choppy and has little sand islands you pass along the way. The ferry didn't make me sea sick like other ferries have. You arrive about 15-30 minutes early, pay $7 per car at the booth, and then drive your car into the queue. Once the time of the ferry's departure arrives, you drive onto the ferry. You can get out of your car and feel the sea breeze in your hair. The trip lasts 35 minutes and then you arrive at Fort Fisher, very close to the large, great NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher. While in the area, also check out the 1921 Fort Fisher Monument, with its cool sea wall across the street. From there walk north through the amazing maritime forest of twisty trees and then cross Fort Fisher Blvd to Fort Fisher Historic Site. Even if it's closed you can walk the grounds, which are wonderful. You climb stairs to enjoy a view of Cape Fear River, fields of wildflowers, and the littl earthen fortifications that look like the film set of Teletubbies!
