Big Talbot Island, Jacksonville, North Florida FL

Description

Big Talbot Island State Park has a driftwood beach that is heavily featured in travel magazines. The driftwood makes for some good photos, but in real life this muddy beach isn't that pretty. For a start, there are bugs that swarm around you even in winter. Next, it's quite hard to find, and you have to walk through a bug-infested forest to get there. Once there, you find a swampy, goopy "beach" with large driftwood on it and very dirty water lapping the shore. The water here is a sound, where a creek ends, so beware of bacteria in the water. The driftwood is unusual but the overall experience is not the best. If you come, come at low tide so that you can walk on the small beach among the driftwood and don't have to see the driftwood only from the bluff above.
