Quebec City's Chateauesque City Hall building is a glory to behold. Add to that a checkered brick terrace above it with chairs for relaxing. And even better, a creative and amazingly varied splash pad! This provides hours of giggly fun for little ones! The splash pad's spray pattern keeps changing, pausing, surprising, leading to so many fun moments for children! Adults love it too, just to watch and remember the fun of childhood, or join in themselves! This is the peak of joy on a summer day! Come on a hot weekend day so you can make the most of the splash pad happiness.
The area around City Hall is a pretty backdrop for the gardens, especially the yellow Hotel Clarendon. One of the tallest historical buildings in Quebec City is next to it, the Edifice Price building, with its delightful steepled roof.
On the streets that line City Hall there are some shops. Cote de la Fabrique, a steep street on the side of City Hall, has mostly treat shops: Baguette & Chocolat, Catherine Mera Patisserie, Smootea Bubble Tea, and Dolce Gelato. This street leads up to Notre-Dame de Quebec Basilica-Cathedral, which is nice to pop into. Sit quietly and look at the lavish interior. The music calms you. Brasserie La Mordue, on Rue de Jardins, has nice outdoor seating across from the leafy grounds of Cathedral Holy Trinity. I don't recommend entering Cathedral Holy Trinity as it is very musty. Also on Rue des Jardins is a favorite spot of mine, Cafe La Maison Smith Des Jardins, with little round tables slanted down the steep street, that catch a lovely breeze. Quebec has such nice breezes because of the Lawrence River. Try their little tubs of couscous with chick peas, or their Croissant Smith sandwich. Rue de Buade is packed with people but somehow Cafe La Maison Smith Des Jardins manages to hide away around the corner from it. I once retreated there when I was tired of people and couldn't find any dinner place that wasn't already reserved ahead! The young people behind the counter are sweet and will offer you their recommendations for what to try.
In autumn, there are pumpkins and harvest decorations in place of the splash pad, at City Hall Gardens. In winter, there is a little marketplace, and twinkling lights.
Cote de la Fabrique leads down to Rue Saint Jean, a very crowded street with lots of cafes and some cool clothing shops that teens enjoy. Rue Saint Jean leads to Artillery Park, a place where you can enter the top of the city gates and stand on the ramparts where they cut through the city. A must-visit!
Take Rue de Buade and you will come to Chateau Frontenac, the center of Old Quebec!
City Hall Gardens Splash Pad is located at 2 Rue des Jardins, Québec City. There are public restrooms at the top of the terrace.
