Plein offers a youthful atmosphere. It is a giant, sunny square filled to the brim on warm days with people enjoying a coffee or beer at one of the many outdoor cafes. Stunning views of modern skyscrapers juxtaposed against historic buildings can be seen from the square. The square used to be a garden of the Counts of Holland, adjacent to 13th century gothic Binnenhof Castle. Take a stroll after your meal to the northwest corner of the square, past Mauritshuis (excellent art museum with great activity kit for kids to complete), through the magical gates of Binnenhof Castle, and into its courtyard with the golden fountain.
